And for devotion to the cause of Christ, she was second to none – but no deranged fanatic, but a highly intelligent woman who sought to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ! Zealous – yes dangerous – certainly not! She served with her husband for years, and died relatively young, with the cause of the gospel apparently far from secure in Burma – but she and her husband are still regarded as the founders of the Burmese church to this day – theirs was no waste of time or talent! She demonstrated powerfully that the Biblical pattern for male and female roles in no way hinders a woman from using all her abilities to the full. She learned self-denial, rather than self-gratification, and found her happiness in having God at the centre of her life. She became famous – though she certainly did not seek fame. We live in an age, when to be zealous for the advancement of the gospel is to risk being labelled a fundamentalist, an extremist, and probably dangerous!Īgainst this background, the life of Ann Judson, wife of Adoniram, and together with him one of the first missionary couples to be sent out from North America, speaks to us as a powerful corrective and an inspiration. We live in an age of feminism, where traditional teaching concerning male/female roles and relationships is caricatured as restrictive and demeaning of women, and where the preponderance of men in certain occupations is seen automatically as an indication of injustice. We live in an age of instant results, where to labour for years with little by way of apparent fruit may be seen by many as a waste of time and talents. We live in an age of celebrity – where some people are famous for being famous, and for little else! We live in an age of self-gratification, where everyone is deemed to have a right to happiness, and where any sinful practice can be justified if it makes you feel good. Sharon James has skilfully woven together extracts from her Memoir and other first-hand accounts with linking narrative in a way that brings Ann's story alive for today and is a powerful testimony to the love, grace and faithfulness of God. And thus commenced one of the greatest dramas of church history - a saga of love, courage, suffering and perseverance. In this biography Ann is allowed to speak for herself. Were it not for these considerations, I should sink down with despair.Ann Hasseltine had received a proposal of marriage from Adoniram Judson, who was shortly to leave for Asia as one of America's first overseas missionaries. Jesus is faithful his promises are precious. He has my heart in his hands, and when I am called to face danger, to pass through scenes of terror and distress, he can inspire me with fortitude, and enable me to trust in him. ![]() I am a creature of God, and he has an undoubted right to do with me, as seems good in his sight. In October 1810 a twenty-year-old girl in the quiet New England town of Bradford wrote the following words in her journal: 'If nothing in providence appears to prevent, I must spend my days in a heathen land.
